Legend of Nanjundeshwara
The town derives its name from the legend of Lord Shiva consuming poison (halahala) during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) to save the world. He is thus known as Nanjundeshwara, "the one who drank poison," and the town became known as Nanjangud, "the abode of Nanjundeshwara."

Nanjangud has been a major Shaiva center for centuries, with references found in ancient texts and inscriptions. The town was ruled by various dynasties, including the Gangas, Cholas, Hoysalas, and the Vijayanagara Empire, each leaving their mark on its cultural and architectural heritage.
